Big & Mysterious History of Sioux City, Iowa: Roberts and Cordura Murder, Smutty Bear

Yankton Sioux Chief Smutty Bear could be considered to not be a friend of the whites in early Sioux City history. He threatened Dr. John Cook ordering him to quit his survey and leave or there would be violence. To which John Cook replied if he Smutty Bear were not peaceable, he would go at once for white men of sufficient number of exterminate (kill) the tribe. The Indians chose to leave and the survey was completed. He became angry with Chief Struck by the Ree for what he viewed as surrendering their land to the whites.

Smutty Bear even tried to raise forces to attack Sioux City. This caused a lot of fear in and around the immediate Sioux City area causing the residents to construct a fort for people to take refuge in. There was even speculation Smutty Bear was reportedly trying to gain support from Struck by the Ree. When Struck by the Ree said no Smutty Bear decided not to attack as he did not have enough of a force to be successful.

Smutty Bear did eventually sign the Treaty of 1858 which allowed the Yankton people to settlement.
