Big & Mysterious History of Sioux City, Iowa: Roberts and Cordura Murder, Incidents, Skirmishes, and other Battles with Indians

There were other small incidents, skirmishes, and battles between whites and Indians. One could speculate and form the valid theory the reason the Indians acted and reacted the way they did is they were frustrated and angry at the way the white man treated them especially when it came to the government of the white man breaking treaties with the Indians.

If that is the case these questions need to be answered:
Who broke the treaty first?
Why was it broken?
Why were promises not kept?
Does breaking the treaties justify the Indians reaction to it?
Was the real reason for the Indians behavior because the treaties were broken? If so, where is the proof?
How much of the treaties did the Indians truly understand?
Was the Indians behavior because the opportunity presented itself and they took advantage of it to commit such acts against the white settlers and population of the area?

What ever the answer the questions above, what ever the reason as to why the Indians took such action some things can be taken as fact from Sioux City's early history:
1. These incidents did indeed occur.
2. The responsibility is on both sides, the Indians and the whites.
3. The fear the whites had of the Indians was real and genuine.
4. There were atrocities committed on both sides and people died on on both sides.

Here are manuscripts, from the white mans point of view, of these incidents:

It all came to a head during and after the Indian uprising of 1862. The Indians ended up coming out on the losing side:
