Big & Mysterious History of Sioux City, Iowa: Roberts and Cordura Murder, Removal of the Memorial

In 1989 the NAACP and other minority groups pressured and asked the City of Sioux City to remove the monument. They wanted it removed because it was found to be offensive to the Indians due to the fact there was no conclusive proof Indians had actually committed the murder of Henry Cordura anad Thomas Roberts.

There was opposition by private citizens and the director of the Sioux City Public Musuem at the time, Bill Diamond.

After much discussion at city council meetings the monument was removed in 1990 and now sits in storage at the Sioux city Public Museum Research Center facility in downtown Sioux City. Research center staff will take people back to see it upon request.
