St. Johns, Franklin and Jackson, Nebraska

Chronology:
1856 - A mile and a half north of Jackson there was a colony started by a group of Irish Catholics from Dubuque, Iowa and a Priest named Father Jermeiah Trecy.

June 24, 1856 - The colony was surveyed and platted and the town was called St. John's.

1858 - This was the first Catholic Parish in Nebraska. Growing rapidly there were 200 residents 2 years after the town of St. Johns was platted.

1860 - Father Trecy went to Washington seeking permission to establish a mission among the Ponca Indians. The Civil War had also begun and Father Trecy became an Army Chaplain, never returning to his beloved colony.

Originally named Franklin, Jackson was founded when the first framed house was built in Dakota county by Gerald Dillon.

1860's - The constant threat of flooding by the Missouri River forced the residents of St. John's to abandon the town and move the new town of Jackson, Neb.

2000 - Census shows population at 205.

2010 - Census shows population at 223.
