Nollen Plaza and Crusoe Umbrella

Located on the eastern side of downtown Des Moines, Iowa is Nollen Plaza.

Named for brothers Henry and Gerard Nollen in recognition of their contribution to the insurance industry in Des Moines the plaza was dedicated in 1979.

The plaza is set up as an amphitheater, used for outdoor events and vendors in the summer. The large beautiful wading pool and waterfall add to the beauty of the plaza.

Located no the northeast corner of the plaza is the large Crusoe Umbrella sculpture. Commissioned in Sepetmeber of 1978 it was installed and inaugurated in November of 1979. Designed and created by Cleas Oldenburg and Coosje van Brugeen, the steel sculpture was purchased with private contributions and a matching grant by the National Endowment for the Arts.
