Hotel Kirkwood Building

Designed in Art Deco style by Chicago architectural firm H.L. Stevens Company and constructed in 1930 the Hotel Kirkwood building stands as a massing, sleek exterior with geometrical detailing complete with a crown as a cap at the top of the building. The building calls attention to the new concepts, at the time in 1930, of informality, comfort and privacy rarely seen in hotels before. The Hotel Kirkwood emerged as a sky scraper in downtown Des Moines and at one time was one of, if not the tallest building in the city.

The building is no longer a hotel. It has been turned into condominiums and apartments for rent. The exterior has been left untouched and still boasts the beautiful features it was constructed with.
