Ice Breaker Mackinaw

Timeline:
December 17, 1941 - Congress authorized construction of MACKINAW.

March 20th, 1943 - The keel was laid at the Toledo Shipbuilding Company, which had won the contract.

1943 - Later in the year Toledo Shipbuilding Company had several delays resulting in heavy penalties causing the company to go into bankruptcy. The contract was taken over by American Shipbuilding and Dry-dock Company.

March 4th, 1944 - The hull was launched.

December 30th, 1944 - WAGB-83 MACKINAW was commissioned.

1944 to June 2006 - for 60 years, operating out of her home port of Cheboygan, Michigan The Coast Cutter Mackinaw provided outstanding service to the communities in the Great Lakes during the frozen winter months. She kept shipping traffic moving when no other vessel could by breaking through the ice.

June 2006 - The United States Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw WAGB-83 is decomissioned and her successor WLBB-30 takes her place, operating out of Cheboygan, Michigan providing the same great service as WAGB-83.
