Mitchell, SD: Carnegie Resource Center, The Carnegie Library Building

Today the building is the Carnegie Resource Center in Mitchell, South Dakota and houses permenant historical collections, artifact, art pieces and is used for historical and genealogical research for the area.

Built in 1903 with funds from Steel magnate Andrew Carnegie and served as the Mitchell, South Dakota Library until the 1970's. Mitchell Area Historical Society acquired the historic Library in 2006, and with the Mitchell Area Genealogical Society, has been working to preserve the building and its history.

The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Mitchell, SD: Carnegie Resource Center, Andrew Jackson Kings exhibit

In the Mitchell, South Dakota Carnegie Resource Center is a permanent collection of about and related to Andrew Jackson Kings. Andrew Jackson Kings moved to Mitchell, SD in April of 1883. and entered the contracting business.

In 1892 using mostly hand tools and tools that did not use electricity or air to operate Kings built the first corn palace in Mitchell, SD in only 59 days.

Mitchell, SD: Carnegie Resource Center, Oscar Howe exhibit

In the Mitchell, South Dakota Carnegie Resource Center is a permanent collection of art and artifacts by Oscar Howe. Oscar Howe was a famous Yanktonai Nakota Sioux artist. In 1940 he painted the the mural "Sun and Rain Clouds Over Hills in the dome of the Carnegie Library building in Mitchell. From 1949 to 1971 Oscar designed the mural made of corn on the Mitchell Corn Palace.

Mitchell, SD: Carnegie Resource Center, Corn Palace exhibit

In the Mitchell, South Dakota Carnegie Resource Center is a permanent collection of corn palace artifacts from 1892 to present day. Today Mitchell, South Dakota is home to the world's only corn palace.

In the Mitchell, South Dakota Carnegie Resource Center is a permanent collection of railroad artifacts from Mitchell's historic past. This is one of the pieces on display. Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad used to have a depot in Mitchell as is an important part of the town's past.

Mitchell, SD: Corn Palace, Timeline, 2010 - 2015

Mitchell, South Dakota is home to the world's only corn palace. It is the city auditorium. It is not the first corn palace. Sioux City, Iowa was home to the first corn palace's. The Mitchell, SD Corn Palace is on the National Register of Historic Places. When the corn palace was visited in 2018 the exterior was in the process of being changed from a weather theme to a military theme. The interior is not changed.
