Sioux City History and Culture by Bicycle Part 85: Sioux City's Haunted History Part 7: Sioux City Airport

The fear of flying is common for a lot of air travelers. We hope the plane we are flying in does not fall out of the sky and crash. Whether we want to admit it or not this is always in the backs of the minds of air travelers. In 1989 passengers aboard United Flight 232 experienced that fear first hand.

On July 19, 1989 United 232 took off from Denver bound for Chicago but never made it. During the flight a serious engine failure took out the main hydraulic system and the back up cable system. The plane tried to land at Sioux City Regional Airport but crashed upon landing killing 121 of the 285 souls on board. The reasons so many lived is because of the 285th Air National Guard Unit, the crash occured during shift change at most of the hospitals in the area so there was double the staff to help with the victims and it happened during daylight hours.

As a result in Sioux City's only major airport disaster the souls who were lost on that tragic day are believed to be haunting the airport and the surrounding area. Strange sounds have been heard coming from areas that are empty of people. Unknown figures have been reported as being seen walking around lost like they are looking for their next flight. These are believed to be the lost souls of United Flight 232 waiting for their next flight. But their next flight to where? Are they expecting their flight to take them to Chicago? Or perhaps into the afterlife?

Living travelers should be aware of these ghostly figures the next time they are standing alone in the baggage claim area waiting for their luggage after landing at Sioux Gateway Airport. Or if they are alone in the video game arcade room and they look over to see another figure standing at the game console next to them, yet it appears the figure is not playing the game for some reason.

I have seen figures in certain areas of the airport that are there and then gone all of a sudden. Maybe some day these ghostly passengers will make it to their final destination, where ever that may be.
