Great Seal of Iowa

This bronz tablet is a near-replica of the state seal used by early Iowa governors. The eagle holds a banner with the state motto: "Our Liberties We Prize Our Rights We Will Maintain". Below the eagle and banner a soldier stands with a gun and liberty cap, the plow not far away. In the background the steamer "Iowa" is shown on the Mississippi River. Behind the steamer is a furnace and smokestack represent the former pig-lead factories. Alexander Doyle of New York City was paid $650 to design the tablet. It is part of the Monuments and Memorials Tour at the Iowa State Capitol Complex in Des Moines.
