Big & Mysterious History of Sioux City, Iowa: Roberts and Cordura Murder, Chasing and Protection from the Indians

After Henry Cordura and Thomas Roberts were found dead and it was assumed Indians committed the murder a group called the Home Guard went on the chase to try and bring the killers to justice. It was also alleged Henry and Thomas were members of the Home Guard. The Home Guard was created to keep the area safe from Indians who may have decided to cause harm to the white residents of the area. No proof exists showing Henry Cordura or Thomas Roberts were members of the Home Guard. There is also speculation that the fact that there was only one murder of two men, Henry Cordura and Thomas Roberts, the Home Guard was effective at keeping the are safe from Indians. There is nothing to prove beyond a reasonable doubt this is true or how effective the Home Guard truly were.

The Home Guard were eventually merged into a military unit. Other military units were also responsible for protection from the Indians, whether it was needed or not. In some situations it was, in others it was not. In reading the documents one could come to the conclusion the military was used as a broad sword to protect against all Indians, good or bad, because they were all perceived to be bad. The military should have been used as a scalpel and been more precise at protecting the white residents against only the Indians who were actually causing the harm and they should not have given in to false and unproven accusations.
