Japanese Bell and Bell House

In 1959 typhoons damaged crops, homes and farmlands of the Yamanashi prefecture in Japan. Citizens of Iowa generously sent breeding hogs and feed corn to aid the district. This program began the a friendship culminating in a sister-state relationship. This was the first of its kind between the United States and Japan, just 14 years after World War II. As a sign of appreciation, the citizens of Yamanashi presented this monument to Iowa in 1962, The 2,000 pound temple bell of piece and friendship along with the bell house were made in Japan.

The bell and bell house stand on the Iowa State Capitol Complex and are part of the Monuments and Memorials Tour in Des Moines.
