Organized beer festival's have been taking place since the early 1800's.
Oktoberfest was originally started in celebration for the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Baria to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810. The first Oktoberfest was celebrated 5 days later on October 17, 1810.
Oktoberfest is still celebrated in Europe and the United States and is seperate from the more modern beer festivals.
The more modern beer festival is an event at which a variety of beers are available for purchase. There may be a theme, for instance beers from a particular area, or a particular brewing style such as winter ales.
Other beer festivals are also celebrated. The modern beer festival in the United States started in the early to mid 1980's and has grown ever since.
One such beer festival is called Steins & Veins Beer & Wine Festival held in Sioux City, Iowa. The third annual Steins and Veins was held in February of 2017. There were craft brewery's from across the local and regional area.
People typically do not attend these festival's to become intoxicated. They attend to enjoy the high quality taste/flavor, texture, and aroma of craft beer. The craft brewer's will have a range and variety of their beer on hand for the patrons to sample. They range from beer they have available all year round, to new style's they have not yet put into full production, to upcoming seasonal beer they will start producing later in the year.
The Sioux City Steins & Veins Beer & Wine Festival is such an event.
