Freedom and Civil Rights in Iowa: Working Toward Equality, Introduction

It could be accurately stated and interpreted civil rights in Iowa started in 1839 when the state was still a territory. Something that is a fact is freedom from slavery did indeed start in 1839 in the Iowa territory after it was granted to Ralph Montgomery by the territorial supreme court. Ever since the Iowa Supreme Court has been handing down critical decisions that has improved civil rights and freedom in the state of Iowa.

On temporary display at the State Historical Museum of Iowa in Des Moines is the Working Toward Equality exhibit.
