Wild Life: Oahe Dam, Animal Remains, Deer, Buck, 07/13/2018

This deer skull was found near the Oahe Dam in central South Dakota. The antlers indicate it was a buck. It is plausible the deer was hit by a motor vehicle on the adjacent highway and made it as far as the where the remains were found and died. The carcass was likely fed by opportunistic predators and other similar animals. Dead deer remains are not that uncommon, but find the skull with antlers still attached is rare.

This doe was observed on the riverfront multi-use recreation trail in Sioux City, Iowa. She was eating from the one of the many mulberry trees along the trail. She then turned and ran away which is when a fawn was seen running with her. This is the same area were a few days before 4 fawns were observed. This doe may be the parent of one to three of the fawns as it is possible for a whitetail doe to have triplets.

These whitetail fawn's were observed along the riverfront multi-use recreation trail in Sioux City, Iowa. At first only two were seen. As the observer had taken photos of the first two and was getting ready to leave he saw a third fawn that was hiding. After taking more photos of the three he then saw a fourth fawn. All 4 still had their spots. No adult deer was seen at the time but it does not mean one was not in the area.
