History and Culture by Bicycle: governor Terry Branstad

In November of 1984 a students from Harding Junior High School in Des Moines, Iowa wrote the governor and asked why Korean War veterans did not have a memorial.

The monument was dedicated on May 28, 1989 by governor Terry Branstad. It was erected on a grassy area south of the Capitol Building on the Iowa State Capitol Complex and is part of the Monuments and Memorials Tour in Des Moines. It has a central obelisk and eight six-foot tablets telling the story of the Korean War by utilizing words, pictures and maps of Korea engraved in the granite.
