Timeline:
December 18, 1855 - A license was issued at Fort Pierre to Paul Pacquette for a ferryboat to operate at the starting point of Military Road to Fort Randall, South Dakota.
June 1, 1863 - Pacquette renewed the license for a ten year term.
1868 - The free wagon bridge is built across the Big Sioux River from Iowa to South Dakota. This allowed horse and pedestrian traffic to easily travel between the 2 communities.
1872 - The Dakota Southern Railroad ran parallel to Military Road reached Elk Point, South Dakota.
1873 - Pacquette's license expired.
Today - The bridge now built of concrete and steel allows for pedestrian, bicycle and motor vehicle traffic to easily travel from Sioux City, Iowa and North Sioux City, South Dakota.
