Sioux City History & Culture by Bicycle Part 36: Sioux City's Terra Cotta, Pearl St.

The book Breaking the Mold, Sioux City's Terra Cotta there is one building on Pearl St. mentioned. It is called the Malone Block. The building is at 501 Pearl St. It was built in 1899 by grocer Thomas Malone & designed by George W. Burkhead, architect. The building is the epitome of Richardson Roamnesque architecture even though Burkhead did not regularly utilize Richardson's principles in his designs.

Sioux City History & Culture Part 35: Sioux City Terra Cotta 6th St.

Similar to 5th St, 6th St. also has only 2 buildings listed in the book Breaking the Mold, Sioux City Terra Cotta. They are the Davidson Building & the Warrior Hotel.

The Davidson Building, located at 505 6th St was built in 1913. It was designed by WIlliam L. Steele, architect & is the finest example of Sullivanesque in Sioux City. The building was built by Ben and Dave Davidson & was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

The Warrior Hotel is located at 521 6th St. It opened in 1931 & was originally called Fontanelle. It is a fine example of mid rise Art Deco. The Warrior Hotel was designed by nationally known architect Alonzo Gentry. from Kansas City. The building was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1985.

Several of the buildings in & near downtown Sioux City were built with beautiful terra cotta as part of the design.

The next in the series of posts about Sioux City's History & Culture are going to be about the terra cotta on these buildings. You will recognize some of the buildings from past posts about the walking tours through the downtown area.

Sioux City was once the terra cotta capital of Iowa. But as time went along these styles fell from favor & what is still here today is but a shadow of what the city used to have in it's downtown area.

The styles of terra cotta used on these historical Sioux City buildings are:

2. Sullivanesque
3. Chicago School Elements
4. Prarie School
5. Morrish Facade
6. Beaux Arts
7. Greek revival
8. Art Deco
9. A unique style fo terra cotta
