Sioux City History & Culture by Bicycle Part 19: Masonic Temple

The Masonic Temple is located on Nebraska St, just north of downtown at 9th st.

The temple currently houses the Abu Bekr Shrine, The Sioux City York Rite bodies & Tyrian Lodge #508. There is also a Masonic Museum in the building. A lot of the rooms used for the York Rite, Tyrian Lodge & the Shrine are beautiful. One in particular is called the Egypt Room. It is adorned with a star painted ceiling & Egyption Motif on the walls.

I do believe tours of the building are available if you call ahead to arrange one.

Shown are pictures of the building itself. But I also took pictures of looking north toward the old Central High School, which I will post about next. I also took pics. of the skyline of the Woodbury County Courthouse & City Hall as well as a pic. looking south into downtown Sioux City.

Sioux City History & Culture by Bicycle Part 20: Central High School

Central High School was originally called The High School, until other high schools were built, then it was renamed to Central High School. It was built in 1893 & had many modern amenities that other schools of the time did not.

The building & campus takes up 4 square blocks of space. From Jackson to Nebraska Streets to the east & West & from 13th to 12 Streets to the north & south.

The student population grew so much an addition had to be built onto the original building. The addition was built with the same stone & architectural style as the original building.

Over time more improvments were made to the high school as they were needed. In 1972 the school was closed in favor of the 3 brand new more modern high schools that were built in Sioux City.

The building was added top the National Registry of Historical Building. Until recently it sat vacant. A few years ago the inside was redone again, but this time for rent controlled apartments, which is what it is used for today.

It is very often referred to as the Castle on the Hill.
