A railfan is a person who is a train enthusiast. There are many forms of railfanning. The simplest is a person who observes and photographs trains when they see one, especially if it is an interesting train not usually seen on today's rail lines. Another type is a person who specifically looks for and photographs historic trains still operated on today's rail lines. Others like to visit the railroad depot and yard locations and watch the activity that occurs during operations on a daily basis.
This new article series is about Railfanning by Bicycle. When the author sees a train when he is riding his bike and if the train is not something typical on today's rail lines, such as an interesting unit train or a caboose that is still in use if he can safely do so he will stop and photograph the train or rolling stock.
