 Known for its elaborate masks and baroque costumes, the Carnival of Venice (Carnevale di Venezia) was first held during the Renaissance as a means for Venice to show their riches to the world. To this day it is celebrated annually with up to three million visitors. One noteworthy event is a yearly contest for the most beautiful mask judged by a panel of international costume and fashion designers.

 It is rumored that Nice carnival (Le Carnaval de Nice) is the original carnival with the earliest record of its existence in 1294. It still takes place over a two week period every February on the French Riviera attracting as many as one million visitors.

 Cologne Carnival (Kölner Karneval) is Germany’s largest and most famous carnival. From Fat Thursday through Ash Wednesday citizens and visitors dress up in costume and celebrate the so-called “crazy days.” Local carnival clubs show off their dance and music skills in numerous parades with elaborate floats and at official carnival balls (Sitzungen).
